I modeled this setting after Franklin Park, well known as a hookup bar back when I used to go. There was a lonely air about that place, and I felt it most in the courtyard in winter, where having a smoke at the tables looked a lot like waiting for someone. This impulsive bit of nostalgia was just one event in a chain that two lonely people engineered - it was inevitable.
