#353 – ready

I had a draft for a comic that would come right after this, where Eve would actually do the move, sort of a sequel to the page where we see her do an axel, but it just didn't come together. I decided ultimately it was funnier and more appropriate to her character that it didn't.

  1. It took me way too long to get this punchline.

    1. I still don't get it.

      1. It took me 10 odd years to get off my butt and google it, but:
"barely perceptible or capable of eliciting a response liminal visual stimuli"

        Now I am the joke-getter!

        1. What, really? The joke's that she's done the move, but nobody could see it? Why's she making that face though?

        2. intense concentration on executing the move

        3. Not quite, it's referring to liminal's other meaning; to be on threshold. To be in a liminal state is to be in transition or the state right before true change. She can't decide if she is going or not, the joke works with the dialogue and situation, but she also ends the page with her on the precipice of action.

      2. "Liminal" = "Existing in a period of transition between two states." (not an exact definition, but close enough)

Someone who is about to start a move, but has not yet started it, would be in a liminal state between the states of "not doing a move" and "doing a move."

Therefore, Eve acting like she's in the process of beginning the "liminal twist" is itself the move–she's in the transitory state between those two points. We never actually see her perform the move, because then she wouldn't be in a liminal state anymore.

  2. Here Eve is a conceptual figure-skater.

    (That's a little bit of a thinker.)
