#462 – pretending to have a career

The original page of this comic is for sale! Just a couple more days to get in on the book pre-order for Listen At Home With Octopus Pie! Order by May 1st and you'll get a little gift and a free signature on standard editions! The Toronto Comics Art Festival is fast approaching! I will be there with books, prints, and glassware. Unfortunately I won't have the new book there in time, but you can pre-order it at the show for a discount. You should definitely go to TCAF if you never have - it's my favorite small press show, and it's free to attend!

  1. You know? I've missed Eve and Hanna's talks. Just like this. This is perfect.

    1. Couldn't have said it better myself. I love this scene, they haven't chatted like this for a very long while.

  2. Lovin' it. Also, this conversation feels a lot more personal with hand-done lettering.

    1. I agree completely. The hand-drawn lettering just feels more spoken-wordy.

  3. Ah, Hannah, i missed you

  4. Don't MFA grads need money ?

    1. That's why they spend all their free time enterring logo design contests on sites like 99designs!

    2. Most of them are trust fund babies. They need only enough to maintain an illusion of independence.

  5. O Pie has an amaaaazing vibe right now. Your lettering is starting to feel very natural, and like, that panel 5 is fantastic, and geez I don't mean to gush – aw man I'm totally gushin'!

    Good stuff!

  6. is that…"dynamism of a dog on a leash" in panel 5? followed up by a crack at m.f.a. grads? i like your subtle humor 😛

    1. I thought I was just seeing things, I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought of that painting.

  7. her outfit in panel four is reminiscent of Animal Crossing

I never realized before that Tom Nook is basically Olly's fursona D:

  8. man i found this comic like a month ago and read it all the way through and i was so sad when i got to the end but then there was another one up today yay i lovee octopus pie cannot get enough !!!!

  9. The Bethlehem fisheries never really forgave Christ for stealing four of their best prospects, and right after they'd completed all that training. Zebedee was pissed when he had to mend all those nets himself.

Simon Peter later admitted that most of their fishermen skills didn't directly translate to becoming fishers OF men, and he felt lucky to have gotten in on the ground floor. "Just shows you what the right internship at the right time can do for your career!" Peter said, while being crucified upside-down.

  10. That second panel is positively lovely; it's been a while since we saw this kind of conversation between Hanna and Eve, and especially with the great scenery.

  11. I must be in the wrong profession… it's essentially impossible to find an internship that /doesn't/ pay

  12. haha poor MFAs. . .

  13. Oh god this whole chapter is like reading my life right now…I just got my third internship and I legit had to fight off 100 others to get it.

  14. You seem to be really upping your game, both with your topicality and your finesse. This is just awesome. Seems to me you’re getting up into Jaime’s territory of sublime wistful believability, if that makes any sense at all. Magical. Gives me shivers.

  15. So, um, I'm guessing that you're not planning to have interns for Pizza Island. So much for sending Periscope's overload east.

    1. one of my studiomates has an intern! I don't think any of the others are looking, though.

  16. Haha XD Thumbs up for Hanna's thinking face!

  17. I suppose there's an appropriate place for internships (I can't imagine using one, myself — when I need help with my strip I pay an art assistant, and when I need help around the house that's what I have children for), but clearly Ollie is abusing the concept. Can't wait to see how this develops.

  18. Hannah's eyes in panel 6 are just like Eve's in the last panel of this one, with the rectangle pupils: http://www.octopuspie.com/2011-04-21/460-internsh

It seems nerdy borderline creepy, but it's just I don't think I've ever seen you do that expression in previous arcs, and I like observing how an artist's style changes over time.

  19. Yay Hanna! I cannot get enough of her.
