#967-971 – he was right

Eve comes to terms with a few things at once. She'd circled around the dual lie that Olly was a) the main source of her problems, and b) looking out for her in some way. The truth is she's only ever been collateral damage in Olly's fight against the world. He is not her father, but her fate is inextricably linked to him. How did she end up in this situation? Did she ever have a choice? From here on out, whether she likes it or not, Eve's journey centers around questions of free will.

  1. The perspective in that final panel is ABSOLUTELY UNREAL. So so so so so good.

  2. This is a fabulous strip. The slow-and-then-all-at-once realisation from Eve. The shot from below as she gets out of the car and the enhanced red and orange colouring as she gets closer to the fire. The fact that Will is right behind her. The reflection in the water in the bottom panel.

[Also took me forever to work out that it was Manuel in the cat carrier that Will had in his hands when running after Eve…]

  3. This is a small detail, but I love Will's slightly distorted word bubble tail behind the car window in panel 9.

The trail of smoke ballooning in size as your eye is led to the reveal of Olly's is also just fantastic.

I don't know if Meredith is answering comment questions, but is this how you always saw OP ending?

    1. Yes, it always made sense to me that Eve's fate was locked, regardless of the many other details that shifted as the story evolved. I saw Olly's burning as a final "fuck you" before Eve takes the reins of her life.

  4. Maybe the most memorable OP strip of all time? This was so shocking the first time I read it, I think I actually gasped. The combo of a sudden climax of the ever-present Olly story and the color work was brilliant, satisfying, and completely unexpected.

I also love Eve answering the fireman with a hearty OKAY as she blatantly ignores his instructions, which is a classic NYC move.

  5. I think last time I didn't scroll down far enough to see the final panel. There was so much smoke in the sky I thought it was just a transition with no actual view of the store.

  6. I've always related to Eve in many ways, but this feels especially striking to be reading while my state burns and everyone wakes up to orange skies…

That is to say, seriously incredible page and panel–the anticipation from the glow of the fire, the faint smoke that gets darker, heavier, and then the reveal… *chef's kiss* mwah! You can really feel the finality, the hit! Oof!

  7. I love love love how Will grabbed Manuel's carrier <3

  8. Maybe the most memorable OP strip of all time? This was so shocking the first time I read it, I think I actually gasped. The combo of a sudden climax of the ever-present Olly story and the color work was brilliant, satisfying, and completely unexpected.

Also love Eve's big "OKAY!" to the firefighter as she completely ignores his request, which is a classic NYC move.
