Not the point, but, I like the way “I’d’ve” is written here. I always wondered, should it be written out “I’d have”, but be said super fast? Should the apostrophe between I and D be dropped? Surely there can’t be two apostrophes….

What they’re saying about not being “whole” is true in a very literal way.
Studies have found that when you spend enough time with a partner, your minds begin to share mental tasks. One person will remember dates, the other names, etc. This causes one’s neural pathways to strengthen/weaken to better accommodate the roles filled by yourself and your partner.
Since we lose our neuro-plasticity as we age, restructuring your mind to function independently grows tougher as well. For older long-married couples, the loss of your lover becomes something you cannot neurologically recover from. (Assuming you were both dependent enough to begin mentally meshing, of course.)
I was thinking about this post-post script the other day for no particular reason and, reading it back, I think I’d personally prefer a narrative where Jane and Mar couldn’t work things out. I understand why Meredith didn’t go that route, but their interactions are so fucking crazy here that the idea of them raising a child fills me with abject terror, lmao. also I have been Jane in this situation (anxiety about being a Queer Digression [WHICH I WAS] and ambivalence/reluctance about children – which I eventually stood on business about and broke things off before we got anywhere remotely close to getting married, thank god) and I don’t know. reading this back in the big year of 2026 their storyline is the only one in the entire comic I can’t square.
honestly i agree. i feel like their ending in this story has jane conceding to something she ultimately does not and likely will not ever want– even the casualness of (spoilers!) “are we talking about a baby or a puppy?” and mar’s preceding dialogue kind of set the stage for how they’re viewing parenthood and what having a baby would mean for them (mar has her desire to be a mom fulfilled, but what of the human being that is now dependent on her seeing them as more than something to take care of? and for jane, her love of marigold wins over her reluctance to have a baby… resulting in the same question!) there’s a real weight to this decision and how it will change them. i hope we get to see more of them someday
