This is a oddly romantic bit of posing, if you've ever ridden a crowded subway with a date. Now that I've left New York, it's odd to me that they'd leave Manhattan and spend their precious time suffering the crowded subway. But my reasoning at the time was it so thoroughly reminds Eve of work that she can't spend her leisure time there. And, I guess, it's also a way to avoid getting into it on any particular subject.
