#418 – single lady

Couple of things today. First off, there’s a new Octopus Pie T-shirt in the Topatoco store! Check it out:

I also have some less-fun (but ultimately optimistic) news about the future of Octopus Pie in book form, outlined in the post below. I’m no longer sending out books for donations, but thank you to everyone who donated on Black Friday! I’m once again amazed by your kindness.

This may be my last update before I set sail for New York – if so, stay tuned for guest strips next week! I’ll be back with new comics very soon.

  1. Sarah says:

All the single lady, indeed. Poor Marigold.

  2. Jess says:

Aw, hell yeah, fuck Times Square. It is the single worst place in New York if you actually live there.

  3. I didn't realise what song it was until I saw the 5th panel. Am I horrible for realising it and not focussing on poor Marigold?

    PS Shirt looks good.

  4. Camui says:

    Bahaha, hoard.

I wonder if he's actually really good at singing, and just can't remember the lyrics.

  5. Namsab says:

    Okay

I will never be able to listen to this song again without hearing "one two times, I hoard you"

    thanks a lot

on another note, I love Marigold's haircut, even though I was so sad about her cutting the dreads D:

And what the hell is Eve wearing

  6. Taylor Lopez says:

    LOL awesome!

Meredith, you've captured the way people interact in everyday life once again ^_^

    Good show!

  7. Matt B. says:

Ooh, you made the shirt! I'll snag one once all my Christmas shopping is done, I've been wanting it ever since you tweeted about it.

  8. Gethsemani says:

Marigold should have started singing to the single ladies, obviously that's not how she is but, I was going through a break up when single ladies came out and it pretty much became my theme song! lol

  9. augh says:

Poor Marigold. Also, there is no way anyone can like Bon Jovi. Not even secretly.

  10. bluh says:

    PHOENICES EVERYWHERE

  11. André says:

    This haircut is sooooooooooooooooooooooo cute!

  12. Tessa says:

    Bwaaaaah

    Too funny :-D

  13. Okay, now I want to hear "Single Ladies" played on a xylophone SO BAD!

  14. Lady M. says:

    Emma-Watson-Inspired-haircut? Cute.

    @Namsab

EXACTLY. Eve looks like she just walked outta Snow White.

  15. dani says:

    Poor Marigold, pooooooooooooooooooooooooooor

  16. Qwil man says:

Man if all those are guilty pleasures, what the hell am I supposed to be listening to?

  17. jenna says:

I don't feel guilty about loving Lady Gaga.

  18. Anthony says:

I immediately sang that when he said it…

  19. This comic makes me go "D'aw" on multiple levels.

  20. Rufus says:

I really don't understand how Devo is a guilty pleasure. Okay, so it's nerdy. But I don't really see the problem.

  21. Kyle H. says:

Hehehehe. That shirt is going to provoke so much defensive behavior and suppressed outrage. :P

With that said, Tears For Fears is NOTHING to be ashamed of!

  22. Rae says:

Gorgeous comic per usual, Meredith. :]

…Was there an e-mail or something that would go out if we're one of the lucky philanthropists (It autocorrected me for writing the word for "one who donates" soo…I had to write "philanthropists" instead…>_>) who will be receiving a book?

    I am still confused. D:

    • meredith says:

I won't be able to send out confirmation e-mails, unfortunately, but I'm mailing all of the books today (and maybe some on Monday). So if you donated yesterday, you'll get it soon. Thanks! :)

  23. Liz says:

I LOVE Marigold's new hair so much :)

So yesterday I was flying home after visiting family for Thanksgiving and our flight attendant seriously was Eve!! She even wore her hair in the little Eve ponytail. It looked exactly like Eve in real life. I was so excited haha :)

  24. jakob says:

related to guilty pleasures, have you seen this?
    http://playground.last.fm/unwanted
    veeery telling :D

  25. Hoshi says:

Eve is ABSOLUTELY FREAKIN' ADORABLE in panel 2.

Also, do want your new shirt.

You should have it in bag form!

  26. abigail says:

I work at a bookstore, and most of our comic strip type books are published by Andrews McNeel Publishing. Take a look at your local Barnes & Noble in the "Cartoonist" section, and you'll see everything has the same symbol on the side. So don't give up hope! Give them a call, and see if they are interested!

  27. Vabolo says:

What? Kansas is a perfectly legitamate group! "Carry On My Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind" are classics!

Although I have to admit that it's hard to admit that some ABBA songs are quite catchy to your friends. LOVE, LOVE, DON'T WASTE YOUR EMOTION LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON MEEEEeeee…

  28. Dragonair says:

marigold looks adorable without her dreads. probably not the best time for that but… still.

  29. Alex says:

Is Eve wearing… a cloak? Did those… come back? Is that acceptable now?

  30. Cece says:

Nooo, Alex. Back away from the cloak. There isn't enough fruitcake flavored flavored brandy in the world to make that cloak OK.

  31. Bryy says:

    Good luck with your move.

  32. wykstrad says:

Between this and her Na'avi costume in the last storyline, I think it's safe to say that Meredith has a soft spot for James Cameron blockbusters.

  33. WinterWren says:

Goodness, do I love that man. I could probably read a short series of just him singing his mangled songs. LoveLoveLove.

    And awww, poor Meredith…

  34. Edison T. Allere says:

Pop music is not my forte. What is the first song Xylophone Man is botching?

    • badmartialarts says:

I think it's Celine Dion – "My Heart Will Go On"

      Real lyrics:

Love was when I loved you

One true time I hold to

In my life we'll always go on

      Near, far, wherever you are

I believe that the heart does go on

  35. Krimson says:

I was feeling really down a couple of minutes ago, and then I read this. I spurted into laughter as soon as I got to the last panel. Wicked genius.

I wish that man was an actual busker in my nearby city because I would totally take the speedline to see him every day.

  36. Whoa says:

    Andrew WK is awesome.

  37. Marissa. says:

I read the comic, and Lol'd at the singing dude.

And then read it again, and Lol'd harder than the first time.

    Just awesome.

  38. la singe says:

Dude. Billy Joel is NOT a guilty pleasure, he is pure awesomeness. He'd kick any of your favorite artists' butts musically and lyrically. I'm stil gonna buy the shirt, tho! :-P

    • Orion Moony says:

Nah. Billy's great, but lyrically… Tom Waits. Townes Van Zandt. Jacques Brel. Damien Rice. He's just not quite at that level…

  39. Garfunkel says:

Oh, Marigold. Take it from one of my guilty pleasures – you're always a woman to meeee.

  40. Shauna says:

poor Marigold, maybe it's just the drawings but she seems to pull off super-short hair really well.

Amazing tshirt, definitely sending a link to my parents as a hint-hint for christmas

  41. Nikki says:

I don't feel sorry for Marigold.

If she wanted to be with Will, she wouldn't get into stupid fights about sweaters.

She just wants people to coddle her.

    AND I WILL NOT.

  42. Andy Vaughn says:

I fully own up to liking Devo, Scissor Sisters, and Meat Loaf. The only problem with liking Meat Loaf is he's kind-of a D-bag and he never writes his own music.

  43. MGreen says:

I feel bad for laughing too hard at xylophone man to feel sorry for Marigold.

  44. Fish says:

    Nice headphones Hanna!

    lol "hoard"

  45. Minz says:

Ahahahaha I laughed so hard at "All of the single lady".

  46. JayZeroSnake says:

    This one got me. XD

  47. ross says:

i've felt just this way before! every song makes me wanna cry.
